The New Berlin Wall: Louisiana’s Attack on Abortion Pills and Women’s Rights
A Dangerous Precedent in the Deep South
During the 20th century, the Soviet Union built the Berlin Wall to trap East Berliners under their oppressive communist regime, cutting them off from the freedoms their neighbors to the West and the freedoms the rest of the world enjoyed. Today, Louisiana’s Republican leaders are doing the same thing—just without the concrete and barbed wire. Instead, they’re using extreme laws to control, confine, and punish anyone who dares to seek freedom.
As a dad, I think about my daughters’ futures every single day. I want them to grow up in a Louisiana where they have the freedom to make their own choices—where their rights aren’t dictated by politicians who will never walk in their shoes. But right now, our state is speeding in the wrong direction. It’s beyond disheartening.
Louisiana has spent years setting the stage for this moment. It started with small restrictions, then bigger ones—compulsory ultrasounds, shuttering clinics, targeting doctors. Then came the bans, the criminal charges, and now the latest: classifying abortion pills as controlled substances, making them harder to get than prescription painkillers.
Of course, Governor Jeff Landry and Attorney General Liz Murrill won’t be stopping there. They want to control movement across state lines, punishing anyone who helps women escape their grip.
And they aren’t alone—some Democrats, like DA Tony Clayton, are helping them do it.
But we shouldn’t be surprised. This is Trump’s MAGA playbook in action.
Control, Punish, Intimidate
Turn red states into places where women’s rights barely exist.
Use the law to intimidate and discourage doctors from performing life-saving procedures.
Make crossing state lines for care feel dangerous—even for those simply trying to help.
During the Cold War, people were shot for trying to cross the Berlin Wall into the West. No one is going to shoot you for crossing a state line for abortion care—but if they can stop you from getting the care you need, they might kill you all the same. An ectopic pregnancy left untreated is fatal. Sepsis doesn’t wait for a court ruling. The goal isn’t just to ban abortion—it’s to make escaping impossible.
This isn’t just an attack on women. It’s an attack on freedom itself. If MAGA extremists and their allies get what they want, people won’t just be punished for helping women access abortion—they’ll be punished for helping women make any choice that politicians don’t like. This is about more than health care. It’s about whether women have the right to control their own futures, their economic stability, and their ability to decide if and when to have children without government interference.
And it’s not happening in isolation.
First, Trump and his allies stacked the Supreme Court with extremists who overturned Roe. Then, MAGA governors across the country started pushing bans, tracking pregnancies, and prosecuting doctors. Now, Jeff Landry and Liz Murrill are turning Louisiana into a test case and if they succeed here, other states will continue down this path.
This is how authoritarianism works: They won’t need a national ban if they make red states so dangerous that abortion is functionally impossible everywhere.
Their message is that Louisiana is NOT free.
When Liz Murrill warned that doctors should be afraid to travel to conservative states, she sent a chilling message:
💬 Be scared. Be silent. Be compliant.
Louisiana’s new law makes it a crime for doctors in other states to send abortion pills here. That means our state is now claiming it has the power to prosecute medical professionals nationwide—punishing them with up to five years in prison just for following the law in their own states.
This is unprecedented.
Imagine if California tried to arrest gun owners in Texas.
Imagine if New York tried to prosecute oil drillers in Oklahoma.
But that’s exactly what Louisiana is doing—because their goal isn’t just banning abortion. Their goal is control. And Trump’s allies are cheering them on.
MAGA’s Louisiana Prison for Women
Just like East Germany justified the Berlin Wall as a way to “protect” its citizens, Louisiana’s MAGA leadership is using the law as an excuse to strip away freedoms and trap women inside a system of oppression.
In Texas, doctors and friends can be sued just for helping someone get an abortion in another state.
In Alabama, lawmakers want to prosecute people who help others leave for care.
And now, Louisiana is criminalizing doctors across the country, claiming power beyond its own borders.
The message is clear: If you live in a Republican state, your body is no longer your own. And if you try to escape or help your loved ones seek life-saving care, they will come after you.
Whether they realize it or not, they are complicit in the far-right’s plan to divide America into places of freedom and places of control.
This isn’t just one law. This is part of a coordinated MAGA strategy to turn red states into authoritarian zones where women’s rights don’t exist.
Louisiana is at a Crossroads—Which Path Will We Take?
Jeff Landry, Liz Murrill, and their MAGA allies want to make Louisiana the testing ground for Trump’s America.
They want a future where politicians—not people—decide what’s best for families.
But we don’t have to accept that future. We either let them build this wall around Louisiana, or we tear it down.
The choice is ours.
